Tijana Rakočević, whose short stories are published in the anthology QUEER BALKAN, answered a few flash questions.

Could you describe yourself in 3 words?

An overweight cat.

Without summarizing it, what would you say your work in the Anthology is about?

Two married women in a strictly patriarchal Montenegrin society in the previous century decide to make love to each other in a field. What could go wrong?

What does the term queer mean to you?

Unusual, vivid, all-colored.

And queer literature?

Literature about the diversity of human nature, which means: literature itself.

How queer is the literary scene in your country?

So queer that the famous Chernobyl quote "not great not terrible" should sound like: "not queer, not heteronormative".

Why do you write?

To make my father proud of me. I failed.

What’s the best an the worst writing advice you’ve ever been given?

The best: write, the world is going to end anyway. The worst: write, the world is going to end anyway.

What you have been reading lately?

Shampoo bottle labels. And Nadine Gordimer.
